The Florida College Reading Council
Cathy Denny Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was named in honor of Cathlene S. Denny, a reading instructor at St. Johns River Community College, and has been presented annually since October 2000. The award consists of a cash prize of at least $500 and is awarded to a student who has taken and successfully completed one or more prep reading courses.

Cathy Denny inspired her colleagues and her students with a zest for life and love of reading. An innovative and dedicated classroom teacher, Cathy was also an active advocate for developmental education and served on the FDEA board and in several other capacities. She was the recipient of the FDEA 1999 Outstanding Educator of the Year award.  Sadly, Cathy passed away on November 26, 1999 following a long battle with cancer.

Applicants for the Cathy Denny Scholarship are asked to write a short essay on a book they have read that has changed their lives. The award is presented at the annual FDEA conference. Click here for details about the application process.
